The author writes, “This spring term (at Oregon State University) there were more recorded cases of academic dishonesty and misinterpretation of the academic rules than in the three previous years. After listening to the appeal of a particularly thorny problem in which the student was denied graduation, I jotted down some of the more common advisee questions and statements and added some ‘appropriate’ responses. After doing this, I felt better. I do not utter such responses, but the temptation arises occasionally”!

Can we assume that most advisors have been “tempted” at some time or other?
