NACADA Review Volume 2: Issue 1

The coeditors and the editorial board are pleased to bring you this special issue of the NACADA Review to celebrate the contributions Dr. Marc Lowenstein has made to scholarly inquiry in academic advising. Such a celebration is called a festschrift: a celebration of scholarly writing, a collection of writings by scholars in tribute to a truly notable scholar. Dr. Marc Lowenstein is such a scholar, one whose influence is widely felt in the world of academic advising scholarship.

This personal growth narrative follows the author's naïve, idealistic entry into the academic advising profession, through disillusionment with the realities found in the higher education arena and fears of her ability to navigate them, to a place of competence and contentment with the contributions made as the end of her career comes into sight. Guided by the road map provided by Marc Lowenstein's body of work, the author learned to approach academic advising as a process in which advisors, through dialogue, coconstruct with their advisees an education that provides meaning and value to the student.

This is a tribute to Dr. Marc Lowenstein, an influential scholar of academic advising theory, whose contributions have not only profoundly informed my work, but also the field.

This article is a personal testimony to more than 40 years of my experiences with Marc Lowenstein, which provides only a small piece of our personal and professional relationships.
