Humanism, as an educational philosophy, is explored as a foundational learning and development theory to inform a new approach to academic advising. Linking humanism to academic advising, humanistic advising emphasizes the importance of advisee growth and change to become self-actualized. Thus, humanistic advising calls for advisors to see students beyond their academic profile, recognize that students' affective matters are worth intentional focus, and aid students in their holistic development as human beings. Five foundational beliefs of humanistic advising are shared along with the phases for humanistic advising and four strategies for practice. Finally, strengths and limitations of humanistic advising are presented.

The purpose of this article is to address how current academic advisors became advisors. In a survey of NACADA members, participants were asked about their demographics, educational backgrounds, and initial and continued interest in academic advising. Knowing this can help advising administrators gain a better understanding of advisor recruitment and retention, as well as help those currently in the profession understand collectively who they are in relation to other advisors, which in turn helps the profession further define the practice of advising.

Coupling is a concept used within education, business, and organizational management literature. Its application to organizational management literature allows researchers to understand how organizations function. This article argues that coupling theory can be applied to advising systems' technical (practice) and authoritative (coordination and supervision) aspects. Using coupling theory as a lens to view advising structures and as a language for communicating that assessment can provide profound lessons for more responsive and effective advising practices on college campuses. Additionally, coupling theory may broaden perspectives and deepen advising leaders' communicative vocabulary and allow them to become more skilled and effective administrators in applying these insights to higher education and their institutions.

Academic advisors exist at the center of institutions of higher education and provide unique and multifaceted services to students in their communities. Though the organizational structure of academic advising varies greatly across institutions, the responsibilities of an advisor typically include course scheduling, degree planning, career support, and facilitating relationships between individual students and diverse campus resources. Given the unique nature of this work and the relationship development it entails, advisors are uniquely placed to impact both individual student success and overall campus effectiveness.
