Advising research from 1965 to the present is reviewed and recommendations are offered to improve research in the years ahead. After presenting the importance of research to the field, suggestions for how individual advisors, their institutions, and NACADA can contribute to advising research efforts are offered.

Developmental academic advising has become a widely used descriptive term about which a great deal has been presented and written. Recent scrutiny of this concept, however, has prompted us to examine some of the fundamental principles upon which this concept is based.

This study examines faculty advisor perspectives on faculty-student advising interactions. A survey questionnaire and two focus groups tapped faculty concerns about a variety of advising issues that faculty members feel contribute or detract from successful advising. Questions regarding the influence of the advising process, including the role of advisors and perceived student expectations, were also asked of advisors. Suggestions for improving the faculty-student advising relationship were also sought. Results suggest that advisors' knowledge of advising and preparation contribute to advising success. Advisors also reported a concern that the time and importance of good advising were not sufficiently recognized by upper-administrative personnel.

Advisors commonly meet with students interested in pursuing a career in a health profession. This paper addresses the admission processes used by medical, dental, pharmacy, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs. Advice on helping students gather information about the professions, seek health-related experience, and prepare academically competitive portfolios is presented. Admission procedures across the health professions are discussed, including the application timelines, as well as institutional use of standardized tests, interviews, and letters of evaluation to make selection decisions. By being better informed about the admissions process in the health professions, advisors can assist students in planning their undergraduate educational experiences.

This preliminary investigation was undertaken to determine how well international student–athletes adjusted to college relative to their domestic teammates and the general student body. The results revealed that international student-athletes were significantly more well-adjusted to college than international nonathletes. International student–athletes adjusted to college as well as students and student–athletes from the United States. Results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. The effects of gender and ethnicity on adjustment to college were also examined.

To plan and implement effective strategies for retention and expedient degree completion, data about the trends that currently exist within a particular program must be available for analysis. This article describes the process used to collect and analyze data on degree completion for 149 graduates of the Health Administration Program at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) between 1993 and 1997. Differences between students enrolled exclusively at EMU and transfer students are presented. The article also includes a description of strategies that have been implemented to improve retention and efficient degree completion for health administration majors.

Advisors can utilize electronic mail to better serve their advisees' information needs. Advisors can use E-mail to not only select the information that is most relevant to students, but also to provide that information immediately, conveniently, and efficiently. The author, a departmental advisor at a large midwestern university, created a listserv exclusively for her advisees. A recent survey indicated that the students are accessing their E-mail regularly, finding the information posted to the listserv useful to them, and often relying on the listserv as a primary information source.
